Vascular Medicine
From prevention to intervention, a vascular medicine specialist
focuses on all aspects of the circulatory system-beyond the
heart. Here you will find care for issues involving the
arteries, veins, or lymphatic system.
Keep the Blood Flowing
BayCare Clinic's vascular medicine physician is fellowship trained
and is a recognized expert in many vascular diseases:
- Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA)- When an artery weakens, it
will bulge and possibly burst. An aneurysm can occur anywhere
in the body, but the most common location is in the abdomen.
- Carotid artery disease -Carotid artery disease, or carotid
artery stenosis, refers to a narrowing of the carotid arteries.
Narrowed arteries are usually caused by a buildup of fat and
cholesterol deposits called plaque.
- Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)- PAD is a narrowing of
the arteries in the legs. Symptoms include pain in the
buttocks, thighs, knees, shins or upper feet.
- Renal artery disease- Renal artery disease involves a narrowing
of the arteries that carry blood away from the kidneys.
- Varicose veins- Varicose veins occur when valves weaken in the
veins, causing blood to pool or collect. Although typically
seen in the legs, varicose veins can occur elsewhere in the
body.
- Chronic venous insufficiency- Venous insufficiency occurs when
the veins in the legs don't return blood back to the heart
properly. When blood backs up and pools in the veins, it can
lead to an ulcer.
- Other common diseases: Raynaud's phenomenon, deep venous
thrombosis (DVT), lymphedema, vasculitis
